In West Devon we are home to a number of thriving market towns such as Tavistock, Hatherleigh, Chagford and Okehampton; brimming with a wide range of wares to suit any type of shopper. Fresh local produce, delightful gifts and handmade goods can be found at any of these market towns, alongside a friendly face and service with a smile. Tuesday is market day in Hatherleigh, and it’s worth noting that Farmers Markets are held in Tavistock on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month. Okehampton hosts their Farmers Markets on the 1st and 3rd Saturday on the month.
Perhaps one of the popular places for shopping in West Devon is Tavistock’s Pannier Market. Situated in the heart of the town centre, you could visit every single day of the week and find something different. Outside the market hall you will find an array of wonderful retailers such as cheese mongers and butchers plus some wonderful cafes to top up your energy after a long day of shopping. Within the town centre there’s a cornucopia of high street names and independent shops with high-end clothing, beautiful flowers, and spellbinding books to pick up. It’s also a thrift shoppers dream with second-hand shops in abundance!
Okehampton is home to a magnificent Victorian Arcade rich with many independent businesses. For a small, rural town this shopping centre is truly remarkable and well-loved by the locals. From cameras to guitars, and fabrics to jewellery, it truly is a shoppers’ delight! Even if you’re not in the market to buy anything new, simply beholding at the stunning architecture of this building will make you giddy. The Red Lion Yard is another wonderful shopping precinct in the town filled with a variety of traders and businesses where you can shop ‘till you drop!
Deep in the West Devon countryside, Hatherleigh sits in the centre of the River Torridge and River Lew. Boasting a superb high street which runs down the hill of the town, Hatherleigh is home to its very own pottery; plus gift shops, cafes and pubs aplenty. North Tawton is another wonderful town situated just a few miles down the road from Hatherleigh. Whilst it’s town centre is small with only a handful of shops and eateries, it certainly makes up for the lack of retailers with wonderful rural views and idyllic cottages decorated with vines and flowers.
Princetown and Chagford are two delightful towns situated within Dartmoor National Park profuse with retailers and places to stop for a bite to eat. In fact, they make wonderful bases to start your exploration of Dartmoor due to its wonderful amenities.
