West Devon is lucky to boast not only the wonderful moors but also an UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is situated on the western side of the region, known as the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape. The area was recognised as a World Heritage Site on 13th July 2006, placing it on a par with other international treasures like Stonehenge and the Great Wall of China.
The entire World Heritage Site stretches over some 20,000 hectares of Devon and Cornwall and was given this status to protect the land and to ensure the history of our fascinating mining landscape lives forevermore.
This UNESCO site is a testament to the region's rich mining heritage, which played a pivotal role in the Industrial Revolution and shaped the landscape and communities of Cornwall and West Devon. It encompasses a wide range of mining features, including mines, engine houses, canals, railways, ports, and other industrial infrastructure.
The mining landscape reflects the extensive extraction of copper, tin, and arsenic, which were vital resources for global trade and contributed significantly to the economic growth of the region. Across the mining landscape, engine houses, ports mines and trade posts are well preserved and form an iconic part of the landscape. Some of these have even been curated and interpreted as visitor attractions such as Tavistock Guildhall and Morwellham Quay.
In addition to the physical remains, the site also preserves the intangible cultural heritage associated with mining, such as the mining communities' traditions, stories, and social practices. It provides a unique opportunity to learn about the lives of miners, their families, and the wider impact of the mining industry on the local culture and identity.
Several visitor centres and museums within the World Heritage Site provide educational resources and exhibits that delve into the history and significance of the mining landscape. Guided tours and walks are available, allowing visitors to explore the mining sites and gain a deeper understanding of this remarkable heritage.
The Cornwall and West Devon mining landscape is not only a significant historical site but also a beautiful and diverse area of natural landscapes. Visitors can enjoy the picturesque countryside, coastal cliffs, and scenic trails that provide a captivating backdrop to the mining heritage.
