About
Tavistock Wharf is located just outside the centre of Tavistock, between the River Tavy and Tavistock Canal. It was built in the 18th century as a busy industrial centre, as the Wharf quay was once the bustling site of 19th century industrial activity, where cargoes of metal bearing ores and slate, lime and agricultural produce were loaded and unloaded.
The building was converted to its present form by the local Council in 1995. Since then, it has been privately run as an arts centre offering live music, cinema, theatre, and other events and is now considered the premier venue for Live Music in West Devon. Immensely popular with touring acts and top tribute shows, it has hosted performances by Wishbone Ash, Focus, Fish, Lindisfarne, Cats in Space and Inglorious, to name just a few.
The Wharf is also home to a well-respected Art Gallery and exhibits work by local and international artists. Artists, painters, photographers and sculptors from Germany, France, Holland, Spain, Finland, Greenland, Azerbaijan, and the USA have joined the team in Tavistock to display their diverse styles and put forward their artistic points of view. As well as individual artists, local schools, art societies and groups often feature in the gallery’s programme of events.
To provide entertainment for local film-lovers outside of Plymouth and Exeter, The Wharf also has its own fantastic cinema that shows a variety of current films. Guests can enjoy a big screen with full Dolby surround sound, so you’re not missing out on the big cinema experience. Sweets, snacks, and ice creams to enjoy during the film are available from the Box Office at sensible prices.
On site, there is also a popular Coffee Shop and Licensed Bar with a unique waterside terrace. The bar is open during all concerts and events, and offers a selection of fine beers, real ales, wines, and spirits until 1am on major performance nights. During live music events in the evening, the coffee shop also offers a barbecue on their waterside terrace – which has an undercover area in case of rain!
Tavistock Wharf’s Coffee Shop, Bar and Art Gallery opening hours are subject to variation due to certain types of show and private functions. Please check their website for further details. The Box Office is open Monday to Saturday from 11:15am – 2:15pm and 6-8pm (excluding Monday evenings.)
