There’s no better feeling than getting out and exploring the great outdoors; luckily, West Devon has hundreds of miles of footpaths, bridleways and public right of ways to meander through. We boast ancient tracks, quaint country lanes and dramatic hills, all providing unbeatable vistas and serene viewpoints.
Dartmoor is, without a doubt, one of the top places for a walking holiday in the country. Dotted across the landscape are idyllic towns and villages with footpaths right on their doorstep meaning access to the unspoilt countryside has never been easier. Plus, a benefit of situating yourself on such a vast moorland means you can trek for miles without seeing a single soul, other than the grazing cattle and wild ponies, of course!
Okehampton is a significant point of interest as the town is home to a great number of eateries, accommodation and shops, but also hosts several footpaths that traverse into the staggering moorland; making it an ideal base for a walking holiday. The West Devon Way is a 37-mile way marked route between Okehampton and Plymouth which follows the western edge of Dartmoor, passing through neolithic settlements, woodland tracks, historic castles and stunning reservoirs.
Perhaps you’re looking for a shorter walk which covers less ground but still provides picturesque views of the surrounding countryside. If so, the Tavy Cleave and Hare Tor walk, for example, is a four-and-a-half-mile pathway that travels alongside the River Tavy and once at the tor provides epic views of the dramatic moorland.
Before embarking on your walk, it’s important to keep a few things in mind. Planning your route means that even if you venture a bit off course, there’s less chance of becoming lost. As the moors are so vast and open there’s a chance you may not get phone signal so it’s always best to come prepared with a map.
Choose to take part in a guided tour is always a great option as you can find out more about the landscape you’re exploring, even if it’s just an audio guide. We also always advise letting someone know where you’re heading and an estimated time of returning just in case you were to get caught in some unknown territory.
Respecting the environment is also a huge aspect of walking. Dartmoor has a ‘leave no trace’ policy so please be mindful of your litter and if you’re walking with dogs keep them on leads near any grazing livestock. Dartmoor is an ecologically sensitive area, so it’s important to respect the environment and wildlife. Stick to marked paths and avoid trampling on delicate vegetation. We’re sure if you stick to these guidelines, you’ll have the perfect amble across the moors.
