A great base for adventures, Hatherleigh is located on the Tarka Trail and within easy reach of Dartmoor National Park, Haldon Belvedere and the popular town of Okehampton.
At the meeting point of the River Torridge and River Lew, this little market town is a delight to visit. With its very own working pottery, independent shops and charming pubs – it’s a great place to explore and meander away the hours.
Hatherleigh lays claim to its own pottery and the Rams Head Sculptures in the Square are just one example of the work of local artists that visitors may find decorating the town.
The pottery, excellent pubs and the interesting and unique independent shops allow visitors every chance to peruse the town’s charms or enjoy a pint and a pub lunch.
Tuesday is Market Day in Hatherleigh and much like many Devon towns, the market place is full of bustle and noise as the locals chase a good deal in the auction and from the many stalls.
A short walk from Hatherleigh is Belvedere Castle where one can take in spectacular panoramic views of both Dartmoor National Park and Exmoor National Park. On a clear day you might even be able to spot 12 church spires from this stunning vantage point.
Hatherleigh hosts a number of fantastic events throughout the year, including an annual Arts Festival in July and a Carnival taking place each November featuring two flaming tar barrel runs. An annual half-marathon called the Ruby Run takes place usually in June between Holsworthy and Hatherleigh, starting from each town in alternate years.
